What is the Templar Cross in the context of wargames?
The Templar Cross is a symbol associated with the Knights Templar, a medieval Christian military order. It typically features a red cross on a white background, symbolising their commitment to Christianity and willingness to sacrifice.
This symbol is often used on shields, banners, and armour of miniatures modelled after knightly orders or religious armies in tabletop wargames. It represents devotion to a sacred cause and is used to give a historical or thematic flair to forces in battle.
What does the Templar Cross symbolise in Warhammer and other wargames?
It symbolises faith and sacrifice on the battlefield. In the Warhammer universe, it can inspire stories of knightly armies, crusades, and spiritual struggles. It is also used to represent characters or units dedicated to a divine or sacred mission.
In Warhammer, it signifies unwavering loyalty and devotion to a higher cause. It can represent forces dedicated to fighting Chaos or protecting humanity, adding an epic and thematic background for narrative campaigns and battles.
In the Warhammer universe, several factions use them, especially in Warhammer 40,000:
Black Templars: The most prominent faction that features these types of symbols. They are a zealous Space Marine chapter, heavily inspired by medieval crusaders. They display them on their power armour, shields, and banners, and their entire lore revolves around an eternal crusade in the name of the Emperor. These are the most iconic factions associated with them, but other Imperial factions may also use similar religious symbols to emphasise their devotion and militant faith.
Adepta Sororitas (Sisters of Battle): While not specifically using them, the Sisters of Battle incorporate extensive religious and crusader-like imagery. Their armour, vehicles, and relics often feature various forms of crosses, iconography, and symbols of faith that echo the spirit of holy warriors.
Imperial Knights: Some Imperial Knights feature heraldry and symbolism reminiscent of Templar knights, including cross-like designs and banners. These noble war machines can be customised to align with a crusading, knightly theme, depending on the Knight House’s traditions.
Crusader Squads Specific units within the Black Templars, like the Crusader Squads, emphasise the Templar aesthetic even further, with prominent cross emblems as part of their identity and armament.
